A Naturopath’s Guide to Medical Cannabis

The naturopathic medical program touches on many subjects such as Traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic medicine, homeopathy and nutrition, but in the end, it all comes back to the healing power of nature. There is no place where this is better demonstrated than in the plant world of botanical medicine.

Unfortunately, due to the legality of the subject matter, our training when it comes to medicinal marijuana is poor so those of us who are interested in finding solutions for patients using the most widely used herb on the planet, are left to discover it’s magic through self-study and case studies.

Throughout this process, I have been floored by the screaming evidence of its benefit when it comes to multiple conditions, often centred around diseases which are otherwise untreatable.

Knowing that the safety profile is better than most drugs on the market today, it continues to frustrate me that more information isn’t made available to the medical profession and the community of individuals it is supposed to be serving.

This is a plant that can grow just about anywhere, has no potential for long-lasting side effects, very few drug interactions and zero toxicity. This plant alone has never killed anyone.

The benefits are endless. I have been privy to stories of it helping with: joint pain, headaches/migraines, anxiety, depression, ADHD, skin conditions, asthma, lack of motivation and concentration, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, PMS, labor pains, lack of appetite and so on.

Not only that, but on a social/spiritual level, for many, it provides an avenue for accessing the creative brain, allowing musicians, artists, actors and writers to produce art that displays their talents that the public then gets to appreciate and value.

This is a herb that mitigates side effects from heavy duty drugs used in cancer treatment and HIV management and manages neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

When working with an education dispensary staff, patients are able to be strain-specific in choosing a species with actions targeted to their complaints.

It can be formulated to provide very specific medicine: high or no high, edible, inhaled, topical – you name it, it works. The effects are immediate (with the exception of edible) and relatively long-lasting. With programs such as CannaTherapy, new users can breath a sigh of relief knowing that their questions can be answers and their exploration safe.

Mother Nature has gifted us with this beautiful plant with it’s multi-faceted uses, it’s time that it gets the respect it deserves. Let’s peel back the stigma and open our minds to the potential of widespread cannabis use creating a new wave of patient-driven healthcare – we so desperately need it!
